Tell us about yourself.
Allan Hess Madison County Commissioner & High School Educator at Humboldt Jr Sr High School. I teach ESL and Spanish.
Tell us about your business, profession, or organization.
I am blessed to serve in dual roles. As a high school educator, we touch on exploring different cultures, dignity of people, and life lessons including finding out what they want to do in life. As a commissioner, I hope to keep the community informed, mentor youth and college students, and help promote and advocate with people that want to help working class people.
What is your professional title or role?
What do you do, who do you serve, and what should people know about your work?
ESL/Spanish teacher & County Commissioner. I want people to know that my job is centered in including more people in the work since it does take a village. Every person is important and we have to live up to that value, find ways to connect with people and keep praying with them.
What makes your business, profession, or organization unique?
What sets you apart from others in your field?
We have to remember what and who got us here. I have two wonderful parents and they still guide me and serve as my sounding board. I have a strong faith in the Lord and many Christian friends that have believed in and supported me. My mindset is all about pushing us to get out of our comfort zone and challenging ourselves to think differently about issues.
How did you get started?
Tell us the story behind your business, career, organization, or leadership journey.
In 9th grade I started attending an Hispanic church. This was my immersion into the culture. It wasn’t just about learning the language, it was making friends and about truly being loved. Standing beside people you see their struggles and triumphs and it motivates you to want to help them. That is the main reason I teach Spanish and ESL now.
What are you most passionate about?
What motivates you personally or professionally?
Other than the gospel, I would have to say learning languages because they connect us and add can a richness to our lives.
What is one accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
Tell us about a milestone, achievement, or moment that stands out.
I would say founding my Men of Integrity club at Humboldt Jr. High School. I saw a need in that many of the young men needed mentoring and once I week I would take my group of 7th and 8th graders and we would talk about finances, how to dress, and just how to be a man on which people can depend.
What are you building, working on, or looking forward to next?
Tell us what’s ahead for you or your business.
Right now in the county commission, I am focused on helping retiring owners preserve their legacy through employee ownership. On September 23rd, I am hosting a business seminar titled ‘Keeping it Local: Preserving Business Legacies Through Employee Ownership’ at theCO.
How are you making an impact in West Tennessee?
